Community based instruction planning can be nerve wracking! Believe me, nothing scares teachers more than taking my students out of their familiar classroom! However, there are so many skills and goals you can work on in alternative environments! Here are a couple of tips to get you started!
Teacher truth: Sometimes we watch movies on Fun Fridays! I know most people think the teacher is lazy and it’s not educational. I beg to differ though. There are some important skills that can be taught when you show a movie in class (or if you go on a CBI to the movie theater). Here are a few things I do to make it functional & educational.
As a secondary special education teacher, I work with teenage students in the areas of english, math, and life skills. The high school setting provides me with a unique opportunity to help these kids. Essentially, transition into adults throughout their stay with me. I place a major emphasis of my instruction on functional life skills that my students will need in the real world.
Work Based Learning impacts our students’ future and gives these students a chance to be a contributing member of their community. WBL has been proven to be successful in creating jobs for students with disabilities and will help prepare our students for aging out of school programs.
