I’ve recently found the most incredible life skills curriculum for older students to prepare them for work. I needed to share this with you! Have you heard of Digitability?
Digitability is an innovative and comprehensive life skills curriculum that prepares students for a variety of workplaces. Digitability provides a work-ready program empowering students with autism and other cognitive disabilities to graduate with a skill-based portfolio and the ability to self-advocate in their daily lives.
We know that as educators, in order for our students to obtain employment, they would need to overcome society’s social and psychological barriers to achieve independence. Wow! That is where Digitability comes in!
What activities does Digitability have?
- Comprehensive Lesson Plans: These address a variety of domains (see below) that are already scripted and differentiated. Lessons come with modified resources available as Google Doc templates and print-ready resources. BONUS! Every teacher gets a 1:1 coach to help plan implementation and find the resources they need.
- Financial Literacy
- Resume, Portfolio & Interviewing
- Technological Literacy & Online Safety
- Workplace Communication and Socialization
- Self-Regulation for Behavior
- Self-Advocacy in the Workplace
- Time & Task Management
- Problem Solving & Flexible Thinking
2. The Bankability platform: This online banking tool works with The Digitability Social Economy, where students earn (and later spend) virtual money to practice workplace behavior. With Bankability, students now receive direct deposits on payday, review pay stubs and personal bank statements. These are amazing job skills for our students to learn!
3. Work Simulations: Lets turn your class into a workplace. Students become employees, showcase their work-ready portfolio and prepare for employment. Work Simulations begin by choosing a project. For example, the class may start a coffee business, learn how to market YouTube videos, or perform data entry. The list is endless!
Finally, after choosing their Work Simulation project, students are hired for jobs and begin practicing workplace behavior, managing their tasks, using tech skills for independence, self-advocating, self-regulating and so much more.
How can I use this in my classroom?
Digitability has a quick and easy reporting system for any life skills classroom! Teachers can receive weekly emails that let you know which students are on track, need support and have money in the bank! This is a wonderful tool for monitoring your student progress. You can review your data dashboard or download a full student progress report. How awesome would it be to attach this report to the IEP?
How convenient is it to have lesson plans that are already planned out for you? Lessons come already differentiated for student levels. Don’t feel like it’s meeting your needs? You get access to a 1:1 coach to help you problem solve to best meet your students where they are at! I’ve never heard of a life skills curriculum that includes this feature.
Creating a simulated work environment can be complicated and time consuming. This resource has made it simple for educators to quickly build up a work environment in their classrooms. Can you believe that it also includes an online banking system to teach money management? Students getting paid for work and spending money they earn!
