Helping our students make progress is a job that special educators do every day. Using a life skills assessment to monitor student progress can help throughout the school year. I use a life skills assessment each year with my students.
Here are a few reasons why! If you want a life skills guide, grab this freebie below!
IEP Goals and Assessment
Teachers create goals to support student growth. A student’s progress on a certain goal will be measured. The progress report reflects the student scores. In other words, it describes how the student is working towards this goal. Furthermore, the progress report may also give strategies for more improvement.
However, this is only one area of growth used to monitor a student’s progress. However, we know students make progress in other areas outside of their IEP goals, too.
For example, I use the life skills assessment. Watch the video below to see inside this tool. Similarly, you can see there are various content areas addressed. Above all, students make progress in multiple ways and at their own paces!

One tool available to these teachers is special education assessment.
Furthermore, an assessment allows you to collect a wide variety of information. Assessments can lead to decisions related to: Instruction, Intervention, Classification and Placement.
