3 tips for Special Education Teachers

I’m excited to introduce this week’s guest blogger: Vidya from AutismFamilyStory.com Vidya is here to talk all about her perspective as an autism mom! Vidya has a son with autism. Through her experiences, she wants to share the 3 tips for special education teachers!

The job of a special education teacher involves working with kids with varying disabilities. It  can be a very rewarding and fulfilling job. This job comes with lots of stress and is not for everyone.

There are a few things I personally feel every special education teacher needs to know about being a special needs mom. I am going to share 3 tips for all Special Education Teachers in the perspective of a special needs mom.

1. We are experts on our child

Teachers go to school to study special education so they can work in this field. Mothers  of  special needs kids might not have special education degrees but certainly we are experts on our child. We know our child the best as we spend the maximum time with them. Teachers do need to take this in to account and if something is not working they should contact us so we can brainstorm together and come up with beat solution for the child.

2. We are on the same team

This is the most important piece which some teachers miss out on. We are not competitors but we are on the same team as the goal for both of us is to help the child to be the best they can be. Collaboration is very important between both parties. Teachers absolutely must share what kind of things the kids are working on at school with the parents so there is a carryover on the home front. This will also help with skill generalization and acquisition of goals.

3. We like to get a feedback

Getting feedback about our child is very important for as special needs moms. Most of the times we always hear the things our child is not able to do. It is very important to us that sometimes we get a little note or a quick phone call from a teacher to tell us some our child did well. This might not seem very significant to the teacher but it might mean the world to a special needs mom. We want the teachers to believe in our child as we do so they can feel good about themselves.

These are some of the things which are very important to me personally and I am sure it is for most moms of kids with special needs . It is stressful for both the teachers and moms so working closely with each other will be greatly beneficial to both.

I hope you found these 3 tips for Special Education Teachers helpful in your journey!
