Brain Breaks for Remote Learning

Virtual teaching is not an easy job. It is important to take virtual brain breaks in between classes and do a quick reset! Not just for the teachers, but for the students too.

Some of our students need to stay near the computer during a break time, so here are some virtual brain breaks!

Here are 4 break options I’ve been using with my virtual students!

Read aloud and animated stories

1. Storyline online

First, Storyline online is a website by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. They have celebrities read stories aloud with animated pictures while the celebrity is reading. It is interactive and engaging for all students.

There are celebrities such as Betty White and Oprah Winfrey. StorylineOnline also has popular titles like Stellaluna, and Strega Nona. These popular titles and celebrities help engage students for 5-15 minutes at a time.

One feature I love about Storyline Online is that it is linked to YouTube, this allows you to get captions to your videos. Perfect for non-readers! Love this brain break!

2. Vooks

Vooks is a website with animated read aloud stories. This website is a streaming service for kids where storybooks come to life!

This website is perfect for littles, but my middle schoolers ask for them daily! There are definitely some titles focused on early learning skills. My students enjoy the seasonal and popular titles. Some students even request Curious George!

Finally, better screen time. This makes the teacher heart happy, parent hearts too!

Movement

3. Go Noodle

Next, GoNoodle engages 14 million kids every month with movement and mindfulness videos created by child development experts. This website is a perfect way to restart the body and refocus your mind!

GoNoodle has mindfulness videos, yoga, meditation, silly songs, stretching, indoor recess, and so many more videos perfect for all types of moments in a crazy teacher’s day.

This was always a favorite website in my classroom to bring up our moods by singing and dancing or to calm us back down with a slow video.

4. Cosmic Kids Yoga

Finally, Jamie from Cosmic Kids Yoga has got it going on! Cosmic Kids Yoga focuses on skills such as yoga, mindfulness and relaxation for kids. These are interactive adventures which build strength, balance and confidence – and get kids into yoga and mindfulness early!

These are perfect for calming and centering students before they transition to a new activity. Not to mention Jamie has themed activities such as Frozen, Trolls or Moana.

For secondary students, I highly recommend the Zen Den for mindfulness and meditation.

For elementary students, I recommend the cutesy yoga videos!

Jamie’s voice is calming and at a perfect tempo for focusing my students!
